Catch it
Move what is under the drip and put a bucket down. If the ceiling is bulging, poke a small hole at the low point so it drains into the bucket instead of coming down in a sheet.
Stay off the roof
Not in the rain, not in the dark, not on a ladder you had to borrow. A wet roof is how people get hurt, and nothing can be sealed while it is raining anyway.
Call
Say that water is actively coming in and we put you first. A tarp goes on as soon as it is safe to be up there; the repair follows when the roof is dry.
Calls answered evenings and weekends
A roof, layer by layer
A roof is built from the deck up and read from the top down. Every job we do belongs to one of its layers.
The covering
What you see from the street and what the weather hits first: composition shingle, standing seam and screw-down metal, concrete and clay tile, and membrane on the flat parts.
Edges and openings
Where roofs actually leak. Flashing at chimneys, walls and skylights, the pipe boots and vents, and the eave with its drip edge, gutters, fascia and soffit.
Underneath
Decking, underlayment and the air moving through the attic. The part of the job you never see and the part that decides how long the covering lasts.
Looking after it
Repairs, inspections, cleaning, and the call when water is already coming in.
What a roof is up against here
A roof in Chico, a roof in Paradise and a roof at Lake Almanor have different enemies. These are the ones that decide what goes on the house.
A hundred days over ninety
Chico summers cook the oil out of asphalt. Shingles here curl and shed granules years before their rating says they should, and the attic under them runs 140 degrees. Ventilation and a rated cool roof shingle are what push the life back out.
The cool roof rule in ChicoEmbers, not flame
The Camp Fire, the North Complex, the Park Fire. Roofs catch from embers landing on needles in the valleys and blowing in through quarter-inch vent screens. The wildland code asks for Class A, listed vents, closed eaves and gutter guards, and so do the insurers.
Fire-resistant roofingThirty pounds a square foot
Paradise designs its roofs for a 30 psf snow load; Magalia, Stirling City, Butte Meadows and the lake see more. Snow sits on shingle and slides off metal, which is why the roofs change as the road climbs, and why snow guards go above the doors.
Metal roofingOaks below, pines above
Chico oaks drop leaves into the gutters every fall. Ridge pines drop needles into the valleys all year, where they hold water under the shingles and dry into tinder by August. A roof under trees needs clearing twice a year.
Roof and gutter cleaningThe north wind takes the ridge
Winter north winds down the valley lift ridge caps and the first course at the eaves, and push rain up under flashing that sheds a plain rain fine. Storm damage is usually the ridge, the edges and the flashing, and usually an insurance claim.
Storm and emergency repairFour building departments
Chico, Oroville and Paradise each issue their own reroof permits and the county covers everything else, each with its own inspector and its own fire and energy rules. A bid without a permit on it is leaving out the only independent check on the work.

About Boe Roofing
Boe Roofing is a father and son company. Robert Boe took out the first Boe Roofing contractor license in 2003; Bobby Boe runs the crew and the phone today and holds the current C-39 license with him. It is a Chico company, based on the north side of town, that has put roofs on everything from downtown rentals to lakefront homes at Almanor.
Most of the work is residential: tear-offs and reroofs in composition shingle, metal roofs for the hills, tile relays, repairs and leak calls. The same crew does commercial flat roofs, skylights, gutters, fascia and soffit, and roof, gutter and solar panel cleaning.
Estimates are free and written. The license, the bond and the workers' compensation policy are on the record at cslb.ca.gov, where you should look up anyone who bids on your roof.
